Sex slaves and Jihadi Brides – problems with sexualising women’s experience of ISIS

Dr Katherine Brown, Lecturer in Islamic Studies, is cited as the key source for David Barnett’s piece Women who are captured by Isis and kept as slaves endure more than just sexual violence for the Independent today. In a consequential conversation on Twitter, Dr Brown was questioned how a title could include the phrase ‘just sexual violence’, to which Dr Brown replied that ‘sexual violence is horrific but by only seeing that aspect of their horror the overall impact is ignored, hindering holistic solutions’, giving a succinct summary of the arguments cited more fully in Barnett’s article.
